Au IXe siècle, c'est-à-dire en plein moyen age, deux empires dominent en Europe: celui de Charlemagne en Occident et Byzance en Orient.

Tous les deux sont chrétiens mais avec des nuances importantes et surtout des chefs religieux qui s’opposent. Tous les deux se veulent les héritiers de l’empire romain mais si l’un connaît une existence de mille ans, l’autre est éphémère.

Partons donc au moyen âge pour comprendre comment ces empires chrétiens se sont affirmés et confrontés.
