Episode Learn the English Word "to skyrocket" and the Phrase "to go through the roof"

0:00 4:28

In this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English verb to skyrocket. When something skyrockets, it means it goes up. The price of gas has certainly skyrocketed. Sorry, past tense there. The price of gas has skyrocketed, and I hope it doesn't skyrocket more in the future.

That means that the price of gas has just it has just kept going up, and it's actually unbelievable now. A dollar 85, a dollar 90 a liter. It's getting a little bit crazy. So. To skyrocket means to increase sharply. Hopefully in the world there isn't more of this happening.

Hopefully prices start to go down instead of skyrocketing. The other phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase to go through the roof, which simply means the same thing. Am I just going to complain about gas prices for this whole video? Maybe. The price of gas has gone through the roof.

Again, I'm using the past tense there. When something goes through the roof, it means that it is more expensive than you expect it or It doesn't just need to be that. You could say the number of days where it rains has gone through the roof, just meaning that there are more and more of them. So, when you are talking about something that is skyrocketing, when you use the verb to skyrocket, it means it's going up sharply.

It is increasing. And when you say something is going to go through the roof, it means it's going to increase sharply. I think the number of white cars on the road in Canada. Has skyrocketed. It's certainly gone through the roof. I think it's the most common color now because we bought a white car.

We bought a little Subaru to replace our blue car, which we sold to our son, and now I see white cars everywhere. But hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Konstantin. Well, the subscribers will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they're not against your being a little sidetracked now and then, since it helps us bond better.

By the way, it's not uncommon for my students to use all kinds of shenanigans to sidetrack me. It's par for the course. Thank you for your wonderful outdoor lesson. You're second to none. Here is a piece of my humble poetry for you. Into the fields with Bob, we take a walk, enjoying festive colors, thoughtful talk, and breathing in this autumn air.

Let Mother Nature's tender care heal all the wounds and make all pains release while watching a wedge of flying geese have a nice week. I think the "have a nice week" wasn't part of the poem, but that is a lovely poem. My response: I hope you have a great week as well. Thanks for your thoughts and for the beautiful poem.

Yeah, thanks, Konstantin. That was really awesome. It's nice to read some creative poetic writing like that. So, but yeah, hey, I'm out here. If you watched my members-only video, which might not be out yet, actually, you'll know that I'm at the local Leisureplex.

So I'm out here because I just popped down here after school. This is down the road from the school that I work at, and I have to like burn a little bit of time. I have to waste a bit of time because I have a meeting at 4:45. So I'm out here just kind of having a look around, enjoying the peace and quiet.

It's quite, it's quite empty. There's really no one here. At all, the only car in the parking lot I think is my car at this point, and yeah, it's just kind of wild how when the weather starts to get a little cooler, people just tend to stay indoors more.

I'm heading this way because it looks like on the wall of the snack shop, which I think this one's called the snack shack, it looks like you can see the names. Of the sports teams that play here, I think these teams might be rugby teams, might be football teams or soccer teams.
