The left-arm quick destroyed South Africa' lower order with the second new ball to roll the hosts for 329, a terrific effort after South Africa raced to 0/140 at lunch. The Proteas were unable to capitalise on half centuries from Marcus Ackerman, Aiden Markram, David Bedingham and Marco Jansen, with loose shots keeping the Australians in the game.
Earlier, the visitors made four changes to their line-up with Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, Cooper Connolly and Nathan Lyon replacing Nic Maddinson, Beau Webster, Scott Boland and an injured Steve Smith.
