Botham Jean ammuttiin kuoliaaksi, kun hän istui oman asuntonsa sohvalla syömässä jäätelöä ja katsomassa urheilua. Ampuja, työvuorostaan juuri kotiutunut poliisi Amber Guyger, sanoi että oli luullut tulleensa omaan kotiinsa ja uskoi Bothamin olevan murtovaras. Oikeudenkäynnissä pohdittiin, oliko ampujalla oikeasti syytä pelätä oman henkensä puolesta, vai oliko hän toiminut ampuessaan huolimattomasti.
