About

This is an advanced course which discusses the limitations of classical solid mechanics and associated finite element method for problems involving cracks or discontinuities and how to overcome these drawbacks by using meshfree methods, peridynamics, and phase field method. The primary focus of this course is to provide the students with state-of-the-art computational methods for modeling and simulation of problems involving large deformation, material nonlinearity, damage, and fracture. Upon successful completion of this course, the students should be able to derive numerical approximation to the equations of motion using various meshfree methods and solve problems involving large deformation and fracture, formulate governing equations in peridynamics framework to solve crack initiation and propagation problems, and develop phase field based models to solve crack propagation problems.

Intended audience: M.Tech. and Ph.D. students of Structural Engineering specialization of Civil Engineering

Prerequisites: B.Tech. level Mechanics of Solids or Strength of Materials, Numerical Methods, Basic Finite Element Method.
