About

This introduction on beam position monitors (BPM) gives a quick overview on BPM systems and then dives into the individual parts. The focus is on the signal detection and normalization using BPM pickups, which couple to the electromagnetic (EM) field of a bunched beam. We cover the most popular BPM pickup types, like broadband button, stripline and split-plane BPMs, as well as resonant cavity BPMs. A note on the beam position measurement of low-beta beams and on the detection of higher order moments is also given. Finally, a few core aspects on BPM signal processing techniques are presented.
