Getting back up! Managing the Relationship between Technology and Organizational Identity

Dr Bareerah Hafeez Hoorani, Assistant Professor at Radboud University in the Netherlands, Dr Hoorani, along with her former supervisor, Michael Gibbert, will present her findings to members of the IR sector at a brown bag lunch.

Abstract:

The main line of inquiry in the existing literature on technology and identity has focused on the effects of technological change on organizational identity, investigating situations where a relatively stable identity had to catch up with ever-changing technology. But what about technology that is 'big', or what we refer to as monolithic technology, which is difficult to upgrade once built, cannot be tested as a whole prior to actual operation, is difficult to move because of its size and is seen as prototypes until the technology is used (e.g., nuclear power plants, space shuttles). To explore this puzzle, we investigate the 2008 breakdown of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire (CERN) . Our work contributes to a deeper understanding on organizational identity and its relationship with technology, which will benefit not only the academic community but also practitioners that are working in high technology companies.
