Probing the Standard Model to 0.37 ppm with the muon anomalous magnetic moment

About

For the past fifty years, the Standard Model has been hugely successful in describing subatomic phenomena. However, recent measurements of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (a_mu) appear to challenge that statement, as they show a significant discrepancy with the reference Standard Model prediction. After providing an overview of the current experimental and theoretical landscape surrounding a_mu, I will present a lattice QCD calculation of the contribution that currently limits the precision of the Standard Model's prediction for a_mu. When combined with the other Standard Model contributions, this calculation yields a prediction that differs from the experimental measurement by only 0.9 standard deviations, with an overall precision of 0.37 ppm. .
