About
The existence of long-lived particles (LLPs) is a common occurrence in many beyond-the-standard-model scenarios. Examples where LLPs can appear include, but are not limited to, R-parity violating supersymmetry (SUSY), split SUSY, gauge mediated SUSY breaking, stealth SUSY, exotic Higgs decays, heavy neutral leptons, and many more. These scenarios are closely connected to important questions in particle physics, like naturalness, dark matter, baryogenesis, and the existence of neutrino mass. The recent results of two searches for long-lived particles using displaced jets and displaced vertices at CMS are presented. The searches exploit the power of the inner tracking system of CMS to reconstruct displaced tracks and displaced vertices, and look for LLPs decaying into final states containing jets. In addition, the two searches complement each other in the small and large lifetime regions. The full Run 2 dataset collected with CMS is analyzed, resulting in currently the most restrictive limits on a large number of LLP models with hadronic decays, for a lifetime range between ~0.1 mm and ~1 m.
