Motivational Message for the first day of class

First Day Message: What You’re Really Here to Learn

Welcome to CIS 95C. Before we open the first milestone, I want to tell you something that might surprise you:

This class isn’t really about risk management.

It’s about what happens when things don’t go as planned.

    It’s about how people communicate—or don’t.
It’s about what we see, what we miss, and what we’re afraid to say out loud.
It’s about silence in meetings, tension between teams, friction in feedback.
It’s about what we do when no one has the perfect answer.

    And most importantly:

It’s about how you lead, decide, listen, and grow when clarity doesn’t come easy.

In this course, you’ll learn how to:

    • Use industry-grade tools to map risk
    • Design controls that protect real people
    • Prioritize when every option has tradeoffs
    • Write memos that drive action
    • Build habits of leadership grounded in humility and clarity

But even more than that, you’ll learn:

    • To trust your judgment
    • To sit with discomfort
    • To work through misalignment
    • To recognize that risk isn’t the exception—it’s the normal state of high-stakes work

    And that’s a good thing.
Because if you can lead when things are uncertain, you’ll be trusted when it matters most.

What I Hope You Leave With

I hope this course makes you:

    • Think more clearly
    • Reflect more deeply
    • Speak more courageously
    • Lead more intentionally

This is your space to practice—not perfection, but growth.

So take the risk. Raise the question. Reframe the problem.

We’re not just here to study risk.
We’re here to become the kind of people who help others navigate it.

Welcome to the practicum. Let’s begin.
