4.8: H. Activist Suggestions and Examples

GROUP ASSIGNMENT: Brainstorm ways the average citizen can help put a stop to stalking. Begin within their homes, expand to their communities, their states, their nation, and finally, globally. Try to have each student come up with a different way to help.

To lessen the number of stalking incidents that take place in our country, we all need to do what we can in our lives and our communities. Suggested actions include:

    • Organize neighborhood patrols against stalking.
    • Take a vocal stand at home, work, places of worship, and so on - opposing violence against women.
    • Educate other victims.
    • Draft, pass and enforce laws.
    • Challenge attitudes and language that degrade women and girls.
    • Demonstrate positive behavior to boys and girls, relatives and friends.
    • Have ongoing international criminal tribunals on crimes against women with law making and enforcement powers.
    • Raise more money to protect witnesses and support victim advocates and organizations.
    • Coordinate self‑defense training for girls and women.
    • Advocate swift, effective prosecution of stalkers.
    • Advocate for more civil suits.
    • Distribute stalking prevention educational information.
    • Encourage and listen when survivors speak out.
