4.6: Exploring Educational Pathways: Certificates, Degrees, and Transfer Options

Now that you have explored possible career options, it is time to examine the educational training required to pursue your career goal. Depending on the career you choose, you may need industry certification or licensure, a certificate, an associate degree, a bachelor's degree, or an advanced degree. Gavilan College offers a variety of educational pathways, including certificates, associate degrees, associate degrees for transfer, and transfer programs that can help you achieve your academic and career goals.

    Certificates

Certificates are short-term training programs that are industry-specific. These programs are typically designed to prepare you for employment, job enhancement, and/or job advancement. Certificate programs vary in length and generally require less than two years of full-time study. The required coursework allows you to gain specialized entry-level skills and training to prepare for industry certification and licensing. Most certificates take at least 18 units to complete.

    Associate Degree Programs (AA/AS)

Associate degree programs require a minimum of 60 units and include both general education coursework and courses within a specific major. An Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree can prepare you for employment, career advancement, or transfer to a four-year institution.

General Education (GE) courses are an essential part of all associate degree and transfer pathways. These courses include areas such as English, math, communication, arts and humanities, social sciences, and science. Completing GE requirements is necessary for both graduation and transfer.

    Associate degree for Transfer (AA-T/AS-T)

Associate Degrees for Transfer (AA-T/AS-T) are specifically designed to help California Community College students transfer to the California State University (CSU) system. These 60-unit programs include at least 18 units in a major and completion of the Cal-GETC general education pattern.

One of the primary benefits of an AA-T or AS-T degree is that you receive guaranteed admission to a CSU campus (with some exceptions for impacted campuses and programs) and enter the CSU system with junior standing. Students who complete an AA-T or AS-T degree are also guaranteed no more than 60 additional units to complete a bachelor's degree after transfer.

Although AA-T and AS-T degrees were designed for CSU transfer, they can also support your planning to transfer to a University of California (UC) campus. However, unlike the CSU system, the UC system does not provide guaranteed admission based on completion of an AA-T or AS-T degree alone. You should work closely with a counselor to identify the appropriate major preparation and general education requirements for your intended UC campus and major.

For more information about AA-T/AS-T go to: http://adegreewithaguarantee.com/

To see if Gavilan College an AA-T or AS-T in your major, go to: https://www.gavilan.edu/student/ctc/transfer_pathways.php

    Transfer Programs

Gavilan College has transfer agreements with four-year institutions that allow you to complete lower-division coursework and transfer as a junior. You can complete general education requirements and major preparation courses at Gavilan College before transferring to pursue a bachelor's degree. For more information about transfer opportunities, visit: https://www.gavilan.edu/student/ctc/transfer.php

    Understanding the Transfer Process

Many students choose to begin their educational journey at Gavilan College to save money, stay close to home, explore career options, or prepare for transfer to a four-year university. If your career goal requires a bachelor's degree or beyond, planning for transfer early is important.

As you can see in the figure below, most bachelor's degree programs require a minimum of 120 semester units. At a community college, you will typically complete approximately the first 60 units of lower-division coursework, including general education and major preparation courses. After transferring, you complete the remaining 60 upper-division units at a four-year university to earn a bachelor's degree.

While attending Gavilan College, you will complete coursework similar to what students complete during their first two years at a university. This includes general education requirements and courses required for your major. With careful planning and regular meetings with a counselor, students can often complete an AA/AS or AA-T/AS-T degree while also preparing for transfer.

Transfer Planning Timeline (Typical Annual Cycle)

Transfer planning follows a yearly cycle, and it is important to complete key steps on time so you do not miss opportunities for admission, programs, or priority consideration. The timeline below outlines when key transfer steps typically occur during the academic year.

CSU Transfer Success Pathway (TSP): Typically begins in your first semester of college (often in August or early fall enrollment). Early participation helps you follow a structured plan from the beginning of your college journey.

UC Transfer Admission Planner (UC TAP): You can begin using UC TAP at any time, but most students start during their first year and continue updating it throughout college.

UC Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG): TAG applications are typically submitted in September for transfer the following fall (for eligible UC campuses and majors).

UC and CSU Transfer Applications: Applications are typically submitted during October through November for admission the following fall term.

ASSIST: Available year-round to plan and review major requirements before applying.

The sections below explain each tool in more detail and how you will use them in your educational planning. Meet with a counselor early to develop a personalized education plan to ensure you are meeting the correct requirements for your specific goal and transfer institution.

    Meet with a Counselor

One of the most important steps in the transfer process is meeting with a counselor early to confirm requirements and develop a personalized education plan. Counselors can help you:

    • Explore transfer options
    • Select appropriate coursework
    • Understand transfer requirements
    • Develop an educational plan
    • Identify transfer resources and opportunities

Learn about Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG)

Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) is an agreement between participating University of California (UC) campuses and California Community Colleges that provides guaranteed admission to students who meet specific eligibility requirements. You may apply for TAG to one participating UC campus per academic year.

If you are not eligible for TAG, you may still apply through the regular UC admission process.

    CSU Transfer Success Pathway (TSP)

The CSU Transfer Success Pathway (TSP) helps California Community College students create a clear pathway to transfer into participating California State University (CSU) campuses. This program is designed primarily for first-time college students who are beginning their academic journey and plan to transfer to a CSU in the future.

You are encouraged to join the CSU TSP during your first semester so you can begin following a structured course plan aligned with your intended major and transfer campus. Early participation will help you stay on track, avoid unnecessary courses, and complete transfer requirements efficiently.

Through TSP, you can identify a major and CSU campus of interest and receive guidance on recommended coursework and academic planning needed for transfer success.

For more general information about transferring to the CSU system, visit: https://www.calstate.edu/apply/transfer

    UC Transfer Admission Planner (TAP)

The UC Transfer Admission Planner (UC TAP) is a free online tool designed for students planning to transfer to a University of California (UC) campus. It allows you to enter completed and planned coursework, track academic progress, and monitor your progress toward meeting UC transfer admission requirements.

You can begin using UC TAP early in your college experience so you can continuously update your academic record and stay on track for UC transfer. The system also helps UC campuses and counselors communicate important transfer planning information to you.

UC TAP is especially important if you are considering Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) at eligible UC campuses, since TAG applications are completed through UC TAP.

You can create and access your UC TAP account here: https://uctap.universityofcalifornia.edu/

    Explore ASSIST

ASSIST (www.assist.org) is the official transfer and articulation system for California’s public colleges and universities, including the California Community Colleges, California State University (CSU), and University of California (UC) systems.

This site provides articulation agreements that show how courses completed at Gavilan College apply toward specific majors at transfer institutions. You can explore these agreements by entering your current college, intended transfer institution, and major of interest. Once this information is entered, ASSIST displays a list of courses that are required or recommended for completing lower-division major preparation prior to transfer.

Completing major preparation coursework at Gavilan College can reduce the number of courses needed after transfer, helping you save both time and money toward earning a bachelor’s degree.

For impacted or highly selective majors, you may be required to complete all or most major preparation coursework before transfer. It is important to carefully review each articulation agreement, as some universities have specific requirements related to minimum grades, course sequencing, or deadlines for completing major requirements.

ASSIST primarily supports transfer planning for California’s public university systems (UC and CSU). While it may include limited information for some participating private institutions, most private and out-of-state universities are not included.

Connect with the Career & Transfer Center

The Career & Transfer Center provides support for students pursuing transfer opportunities. Services may include:

    • Transfer planning assistance
    • University representative appointments
    • Transfer fairs
    • CSU and UC application workshops
    • Common Application workshops
    • TAG workshops
    • Personal statement workshops

    Planning Your Next Steps

Once you have identified the educational pathway that best aligns with your career goals—whether a certificate, AA/AS degree, AA-T/AS-T degree, or transfer program—you are ready to begin developing your individualized educational plan.

Remember that many students pursue multiple goals at the same time. With careful planning and guidance from a counselor, you may be able to complete a certificate, earn an associate degree, and prepare for transfer simultaneously.

The next section will introduce tools such as counseling services, Program Maps, and myDegreeWorks that you will use to actively plan, track, and update your educational progress.
