The Interpersonal Advantage: Communication in Practice
The Interpersonal Advantage: Communication in Practice (2026) is a major remix built upon the strong foundation established by the original authors of Interpersonal Communication: Context and Connection (2021). We want to honor and acknowledge that team—the trailblazers whose work provided the structure, organization, and pedagogical spirit that made the original text such a valuable resource for students. Their contributions created the groundwork from which this new, significantly expanded edition could grow.
While the original text offered an engaging overview of interpersonal communication grounded in theory, research, and practical application, The Interpersonal Advantage introduces substantial new content that reflects current scholarship, contemporary student experiences, and statewide curricular alignment with Common Course Numbering COMM 1004. Each chapter now includes two signature additions: Interpersonal Communication Theory, which deepens and updates the theoretical landscape, and Interpersonal Research, which introduces students to qualitative, quantitative, and mixed‑methods approaches used in the field. These sections help students understand both what interpersonal communication is and how scholars study it.
We also integrated Student Voices throughout the text—reflections, applications, and lived experiences contributed by college students—to help readers connect course concepts to real relational situations. Chapters were updated with current events, new research, and revisions based on student feedback. A new chapter on culture expands the text’s attention to identity, worldview, and equity‑minded communication practices.
