    6.10: Assignments

Assignment 1: One Crisis, Four Theories

Select a current international political issue involving at least two countries. Analyze the same issue using four theoretical lenses from Section 6.3. For each lens, identify the actors it emphasizes, the causal mechanism it prioritizes, the evidence it makes visible, and one important element it may overlook. Conclude by arguing whether the theories are competing explanations or complementary tools. Use at least four credible sources, including two scholarly sources. Suggested length: 1,200–1,500 words.

    Assignment 2: The Sovereignty Audit

Choose one country other than the United States and conduct a “sovereignty audit.” Begin by identifying areas in which the government possesses strong formal authority. Then trace at least four external relationships that constrain, enable, or reshape practical autonomy, for example trade, debt, migration, military alliances, climate vulnerability, technology, energy, international organizations, or multinational corporations. Your conclusion should answer the question: Is sovereignty best understood as control, independence, bargaining capacity, or something else? Use a minimum of one scholarly source, one institutional or government source, and one current data source. Suggested length: 1,200 words plus one original systems map.

Assignment 3: Who Actually Has Power Here?

Choose a global governance problem such as artificial intelligence, climate change, migration, global health, critical minerals, cyber conflict, food security, or international finance. Identify the major actors involved and trace how at least four different forms of power operate: legal authority, economic power, military or coercive power, structural power, soft power, informational power, or agenda-setting power. Do not simply rank the actors. Explain how their forms of power interact and where accountability becomes difficult to locate. End with one realistic governance reform and identify the trade-off it would create. Suggested length: 1,500 words.
