1.4.1: What prompts are and how wording affects output
Opening the book…
The Power of the Ask
In AI tools like ChatGPT or DALL·E, the input you type is called a prompt. A prompt is simply a request or instruction given to the AI model to generate a response—whether that's a paragraph, a summary, a quiz question, an image, or something else entirely.
But here’s the catch: how you phrase the prompt matters. A lot.
The AI doesn’t interpret intent like a human. It responds to what you say, not necessarily what you meant. That’s why even small changes in wording can produce very different results.
🧠 So What Is a Prompt?
A prompt can be:
A question: “What are the causes of the French Revolution?”
An instruction: “Write a 3-question multiple-choice quiz on mitosis for high school students.”
A task with context: “Explain confirmation bias using a real-world example appropriate for a psychology course.”
Prompts can be short and simple—or long and detailed. The more guidance you provide, the more accurate and useful the output tends to be.
✏️ Why Wording Changes Everything
Let’s look at a basic example using ChatGPT:
Prompt A:
“Write a paragraph about climate change.”
Prompt B:
“Write a student-friendly paragraph for a general education course explaining how human activity contributes to climate change, using everyday language and one real-world example.”
Outcome:
Prompt A gives you a generic summary.
Prompt B gives you a tailored explanation suited to your class and tone.
🔄 Prompting as a Conversation
You don’t need to get it perfect on the first try. Think of prompting as an iterative process:
Start with a basic idea
Read what the AI gives you
Clarify, refine, or build on the result
This is where prompt engineering comes in—but you don’t need to master that. Just being aware of the impact of your wording gives you a huge head start.
🎓 Why It Matters for Instructors
You control the quality of the output through the quality of your prompt.
Prompts can be reused, refined, or customized across assignments, courses, or student levels.
Understanding prompt phrasing helps you teach students how to use AI responsibly and effectively.
