    5.2.1: Types of Value

    The Value of Information

Information has different types of value including as:

    • as a commodity
    • as a means of education
    • as a means to influence
    • as a means of understanding the world

Legal, ethical, and socioeconomic concerns influence the production, dissemination, and use of information in different settings, including academia.

The Monetary Value of Academic Publishing

Academic publishing is big business and commercial academic publishers make billions of dollars. You've undoubtedly been directly impacted by this; you've likely faced decisions on whether to buy a $100+ textbook that is required for a course.

The Value of Your Attention and Data

As we learned in our examination of the attention economy, your engagement with online content is valuable in itself. Data about you, such as your interests and political leanings, where you live, what you buy, and how much money are valuable to political parties, social media companies, retailers, and other corporations.
