    1.6E: An Application to Chemical Reactions Exercises
    Exercise \(\PageIndex{1}\)

    Balance the chemical reaction.

    \[\ce{CH4 + O2 -> CO2 + H2O}. \nonumber\]

    This is the burning of methane \(\ce{CH4}\).

    Exercise \(\PageIndex{2}\)

    Balance the chemical reaction.

    \[\ce{ NH3 + CuO -> N2 + Cu + H2O}. \nonumber\]

    Here \(\ce{NH3}\) is ammonia, \(\ce{CuO}\) is copper oxide, \(\ce{Cu}\) is copper, and \(\ce{N2}\) is nitrogen.

    Answer

    \(2\mbox{NH}_{3} + 3\mbox{CuO} \rightarrow \mbox{N}_{2} + 3\mbox{Cu} + 3\mbox{H}_{2}\mbox{O}\)

    Exercise \(\PageIndex{3}\)

    Balance the chemical reaction.

    \[\ce{CO2 + H2O -> C6H12O6 + O2}. \nonumber\]

    This is called the photosynthesis reaction and \(\ce{C6H12O6}\) is glucose.

    Exercise \(\PageIndex{4}\)

    Balance the chemical reaction.

    \[\ce{Pb(N3)2 + Cr(MnO4)2 -> Cr2O3 +MnO2 + Pb3O4 + NO}. \nonumber\]

    Answer

    \(\ce{15Pb(N3)2 + 44Cr(MnO4)2 → 22Cr2O3 + 88MnO2 + 5Pb3O4 + 90NO}\)
