Common Mistakes
- Do Not Cross the Line: When proving an identity, you must treat each side of the equation separately. Do not add, subtract, multiply, divide, or perform any other operation on both sides simultaneously, as this assumes the identity is already true.
- Giving Up on One Side: If you get stuck while manipulating one side of an identity, you should try working with the other side to see if you can meet in the middle or gain insight into the necessary steps.
- Not Using Sines and Cosines: When other algebraic or identity-based strategies fail, a reliable technique is to convert all trigonometric functions in the expression into their sine and cosine equivalents.
- Building Instead of Simplifying: It is almost always easier to start with the more complex side of an identity and simplify it to match the other side, rather than trying to build up the simpler side.
