    Definitions

    • Arc and Arc Length: An arc is the portion of the circumference of a circle between two points on its edge. The arc length is the distance along this curved portion.
    • Central Angle: An angle whose vertex is at the center of a circle.
    • Subtend: A central angle is said to subtend (or span) an arc if its sides pass through the endpoints of the arc.
    • Radian Measure: The radian measure of an angle is defined as the product of its fraction of a complete revolution and \(2\pi\).

    Theorems

    • Angle Measure Conversion Theorem: The relationship between radians and degrees can be used to create conversion factors: \(1 = \frac{180^\circ}{\pi \text{ radians}}\) and \(1 = \frac{\pi \text{ radians}}{180^\circ}\).
    • Arc Length Formula: On a circle of radius \(r\), the length \(s\) of an arc spanned by a central angle \(\theta\) is given by \(s = r\theta\), provided that \(\theta\) is measured in radians.

    Common Mistakes

    • The Radian Requirement: The arc length formula \(s = r\theta\) is only valid if the angle \(\theta\) is measured in radians. Using an angle in degrees will produce an incorrect result.
    • Confusing Radians and Degrees: Be mindful of the units for a given angle. An angle of 1 radian is approximately 57.3°, whereas an angle of 1° is very small. Do not use the two interchangeably.
    • Thinking Radians Must Include \(\pi\): While many common angles in radians are expressed as multiples of \(\pi\) (e.g., \(\frac{\pi}{4}\)), an angle can be measured in radians without \(\pi\) (e.g., 2 radians).
