Welcome to English 203: World Literature I
Welcome to English 203: World Literature I. In this course, we will explore some of the world's most influential literary works, from the earliest surviving epics of ancient Mesopotamia to the humanist writings of the Renaissance. Although these texts were written across thousands of years and represent diverse cultures and traditions, they continue to raise questions that remain meaningful today: What makes a good leader? How should we respond to suffering? What gives life purpose? How do stories shape civilizations?
This textbook has been developed as an Open Educational Resource (OER) to provide free and accessible course materials for students. It combines carefully selected primary readings with historical context, literary analysis, discussion questions, and writing guidance designed specifically for English 203. Throughout the semester, you will learn not only about individual literary works but also about the cultural traditions, historical periods, and ideas that influenced them.
Reading world literature requires curiosity, patience, and a willingness to encounter perspectives that may differ from your own. Some texts may challenge your assumptions or reflect values that seem unfamiliar. Rather than judging these works by contemporary standards alone, we will strive to understand them within the historical and cultural contexts in which they were created while also considering their continued relevance in the modern world.
As you progress through this textbook, you will practice close reading, literary analysis, comparative thinking, and evidence-based writing. Each unit is designed to help you develop the skills necessary to interpret literature thoughtfully and communicate your ideas clearly through discussion and academic writing.
Whether this is your first literature course or you have studied literature before, I hope these readings encourage you to see connections across cultures and historical periods while discovering new ways of understanding both the past and the present.
