    13.3: Trauma-Informed and Healing-Centered Group Practices - Assignment

“Designing for Healing: A Trauma-Aware Practice Reflection”
Length: 2–3 pages (excluding title page)

Purpose: To apply concepts of trauma awareness, psychological safety, and healing-centered engagement to a real or imagined educational or organizational setting.

    Assignment Overview

Students will create a Trauma-Aware Improvement Proposal that reimagines an environment (classroom, workplace, community organization, team, or program) to better support safety, belonging, and healing. Rather than conducting research, students will use course concepts and personal/professional observations to identify opportunities for more compassionate and responsive practices.

    Assignment Prompt

Imagine you have been invited to redesign an environment where people learn, work, or collaborate. Using the principles of trauma awareness, psychological safety, and healing-centered engagement, develop a brief proposal that answers:

    1. What is the challenge?
Describe a common situation or practice that may create stress, disconnection, exclusion, or barriers to participation.
    2. What needs to change?
Explain how trauma-aware thinking changes the way we understand people’s behaviors, needs, and experiences.
    3. What would a healing-centered environment look like?
Propose 3–5 specific strategies, practices, or cultural shifts that promote:

    Trust and emotional safety

    Belonging and inclusion

    Voice, choice, and agency

    Strengths and resilience

    1. Your Leadership Reflection
Describe your role in creating psychologically safe spaces. What attitudes, behaviors, or practices would you personally commit to developing?

    Creative Element (Choose One)

Include one innovative component that represents your vision for a healing-centered environment:

    • A “Psychological Safety Blueprint” (visual map of your proposed environment)
    • A “Trauma-Aware Manifesto” (a set of guiding principles or commitments)
    • A “Before and After” scenario showing how a situation changes through trauma-responsive practice
    • A Letter to Future Leaders describing how they can create environments where people thrive

    Requirements

    • 2–3 pages, double-spaced
    • Use course readings/videos as conceptual references (no outside research required)
    • Demonstrate understanding of:

    Trauma awareness

    Psychological safety

    Healing-centered engagement

    Application to practice
