Opening the book…
If you want to dig deeper and truly uncover sources that will allow you to complete star quality college work, get in the habit of searching iteratively. Start with the basic search techniques outlined in Chapter 4. Take a look at your results. Then refine your search strategy (then refine it again). You are bound to go further by trying out a number of advanced search strategies.
- Try working with Subject Headings.
- Use quotation marks to search for phrases (Phrase Searching).
- Use Wildcard and Truncation symbols to pull in word variations.
- Try Boolean Searching, combing your keywords with operators - AND, OR, NOT.
- Become familiar with Google Advanced Search.
- Search Google Scholar, but don't pay for articles (your library should be able to offer you these articles through their databases or Interlibrary Loan).
- Find better coverage through Lateral Reading.
When you try finding better coverage through lateral reading you are actually beginning the evaluation process. We will work on fully evaluating sources in Chapter 6.
