James William Moore is a photographer, curator, educator, and art historian who believes in the power of the image to democratize expression and reshape how we understand the world. His journey began at the age of four, when his mother placed a Brownie camera in his hands. That simple gesture—passing on a well-loved, well-used camera—sparked a lifelong fascination with the art and accessibility of photography.

James holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts in Photography, both from San Jose State University, with focused studies in both education, digital media, and art history. His practice is rooted in the idea that photography is not just a technical skill or a visual record, but a language—one capable of storytelling, resistance, memory, and joy.

As a working artist, James embraces a wide spectrum of influences, from historical processes to contemporary digital experimentation. His work often plays with cultural references, humor, and the aesthetics of camp to question established narratives and invite new ones.

Having taught at both Gavilan College and San Jose State University, James brings his love of the medium and its history into the classroom. He fosters an environment of exploration, where students of all backgrounds are encouraged to take creative risks, challenge conventions, and see photography as both a personal and cultural tool. His dedication to inclusion and curiosity guides both his pedagogy and his writing, including this textbook, which aims to open the story of photography to everyone—no prerequisites, no barriers, just light, lens, and the urge to see.
