15: Ethical Consumerism by Beth Harris

This unit asks students to think about the ways that they shop for food and clothing and to question the possibilities and problems of ethical consumerism. The readings are “The Hidden Costs Behind Cheap Clothing,” by Alexandra L. Bernard, and “Food Security,” by Zarrin Caldwell (also featured in the OER “Small Farms and Corporate Farms: Argument and Counterargument, Writing and Rewriting.”) The activity, ideally used before the readings, asks students to share their food and clothing shopping experiences. The supplemental handout reviews basics of quoting and provides samples, and the writing assignment asks students to begin with the body paragraphs of an essay, working to use quotes within their own writing on the issue.
