    4.3: Andiamo!

    Let’s go!

Andare [to go] is an indispensable verb to know:

    (io) vado (noi) andiamo
    (tu) vai (voi) andate
(lui, lei, Lei) va (loro) vanno

Where we go determines what preposition we use:

IN + countries, states, regions, and a lot of places (many feminine) A + cities, towns, and a lot of places DA + people and people’s homes or workplace
in Italia a Bologna da Stefano
in Arizona ad Arezzo da Anna
in Puglia a casa [home] da un amico [to a friend’s place]
in montagna [to the mountains] a scuola [to school] da mia madre [to my mother’s]
in campagna [to the countryside] a lezione [to class] da mio padre [to my father’s]
in città a teatro dai miei [to my parents’]
in centro [downtown] al cinema da te [to your place]
in biblioteca al museo da me [to my place]
in discoteca al parco da lui [to his place]
in libreria al bar da lei [to her place]
in panetteria al ristorante da noi [to our place]
in piscina [to the pool] al mercato dal dottore [to the doctor’s]
in banca all’università dal dentista [to the dentist’s]
in palestra [to the gym] a mangiare dal professore [to the professor’s]
in mensa [to the cafeteria] a correre ecc.
in farmacia al mare [to the sea]
    ecc. ecc.

As you can see, da and a often combine with the article (as you learned when studying l’ora, i.e.: studio dalle sei alle 9). We will learn every combination in the next unit.
