3.7.2: Case Study 2 - AI in Education

    Background:

Mr. Davis teaches 10th-grade English in a public school district that recently adopted an AI-powered essay-grading system to save time on grading and standardize feedback. The system scores essays and provides feedback on grammar, structure, and clarity.

    Scenario:

After a few months, Mr. Davis notices that essays from multilingual students tend to receive lower scores, even when their content is strong. Students who rely on dialects or nonstandard English are penalized for “language issues.” Mr. Davis begins to worry that the system is reinforcing linguistic bias.

    Questions to Explore:

    • What risks arise when AI is used to evaluate student work?
    • How should educators respond when automated tools show potential bias?
    • What balance should be struck between efficiency and fairness?
