    10.2: Why Data Visualization Matters

A plot, or graph, is a visual representation of data. In engineering, science, business, and many other fields, data is often easier to understand when we can see it. A table of numbers may contain all the information we need, but a plot can reveal patterns, trends, outliers, and relationships much more quickly.

For example, imagine that you measure the temperature in a room every two hours. If you only look at the numbers, it may take a little effort to notice when the room was warmest. But if you plot temperature versus time, the trend becomes almost immediate. You can see whether the temperature rises steadily, drops suddenly, or stays nearly constant.

MATLAB is especially strong at visualization. It has many built-in plotting functions, from simple two-dimensional line plots to three-dimensional surface plots and animations. In this chapter, we will start with the basics and build toward more advanced visualizations.

    Note

A good plot is not just decoration. It is a tool for thinking. It helps you understand data and communicate results to others.
