Opening the book…
MATLAB is often introduced as a programming language, but one of its greatest strengths is that it is also a mathematical problem-solving environment. Engineers, scientists, and technicians frequently collect data from experiments, sensors, surveys, simulations, or measurements. Once the data is available, they need to answer questions such as:
- What value should we expect at a point we did not measure?
- What equation best describes the trend in our data?
- What is the area under this curve?
- How fast is this quantity changing?
- Where does this function cross zero?
These questions are applied mathematics questions. MATLAB gives us built-in tools to answer them with only a few lines of code. The important part is learning which tool matches which question.
