Opening the book…
As cloud computing becomes ubiquitous, its environmental impact has come under increasing scrutiny. Data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity and water (for cooling), and the growth of AI and always-on services only amplifies this. The future of cloud computing must therefore be sustainable, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change. Cloud providers and enterprises are adopting green computing strategies on multiple fronts: improving energy efficiency, powering infrastructure with renewable energy, optimizing workloads to reduce waste, and innovating in data center design (cooling, materials, location). Additionally, there is a push for carbon-aware computing, where cloud workloads are scheduled or located in ways that minimize carbon emissions. In this section, we explore these trends and the role of cloud project managers in leading sustainable practices.
