13.3: Edge Computing- Extending Cloud to the Device Edge

As IoT deployments grew, it became evident that not all computing could—or should—be done in centralized cloud data centers. Edge computing is the paradigm of moving computation and data processing closer to the sources of data (the devices or the “edge” of the network) instead of relying solely on the cloud. In architectural terms, edge computing introduces additional tiers between IoT devices and the central cloud, where some processing, storage, and decision-making occur locally or regionally rather than in a remote data center. This section examines the architectural differences between edge and cloud computing, the benefits of edge computing, and the challenges it brings.
