Hands-On Lab Exercise
Lab: Building a Cloud Migration Business Case
Objective: Develop a business case document for migrating a fictional company's IT infrastructure to the cloud.
Scenario: TechRetail Inc. is a growing e-commerce company with the following current infrastructure:
- 20 on-premises servers (average utilization: 30%)
- Annual IT infrastructure costs: $500,000 (hardware, maintenance, staff, power, cooling)
- Experiences 4x traffic spikes during holiday sales
- Has experienced 3 unplanned outages in the past year (average downtime: 6 hours each)
- Plans to expand to 2 new international markets next year
Instructions:
- Current State Assessment (20 min): Document the current IT challenges TechRetail faces, including underutilization, scalability limitations, and reliability issues.
- Cloud Solution Design (20 min): Propose a cloud architecture using at least two service models (IaaS, PaaS, or SaaS). Specify which workloads would use which model and justify your choices.
- Cost Analysis (20 min): Create a 3-year TCO comparison between maintaining the current on-premises setup versus migrating to cloud. Use the following assumptions:
- Cloud equivalent cost: $25,000/month base + auto-scaling costs during peaks
- Migration cost: $75,000 one-time
- On-premises growth cost: $150,000/year for new hardware to support expansion
- Risk Assessment (15 min): Identify at least 5 risks of cloud migration and propose mitigation strategies for each.
- Executive Summary (15 min): Write a one-page executive summary recommending cloud adoption, supported by your analysis.
Deliverables:
- Written business case document (3–5 pages)
- TCO comparison table or spreadsheet
- Risk assessment matrix
