    5.1: Introduction

In today's business environment, cloud computing has moved from a buzzword to a fundamental pillar of enterprise IT strategy. Designing an enterprise cloud strategy means creating a holistic plan for how an organization will use cloud services to achieve its business goals. This involves aligning technology with business processes, governance, and future growth. A well-crafted cloud strategy defines what should move to the cloud, how it should operate there, and who will manage and use these services. In essence, it provides a roadmap for integrating cloud platforms and services into the enterprise’s architecture in a controlled and efficient manner.

In this chapter, we will discuss the key principles and components of an enterprise cloud strategy. We begin by examining the cloud computing ecosystem and the roles of various stakeholders – from cloud clients and partners to vendors. We then delve into seven fundamental principles that guide the design of cloud strategy: integrated ecosystem management, virtualization, service orientation (including microservices), provisioning/subscription, configurable enablement, unified information exchange, and governance. Along the way, we will highlight real-world examples of companies applying these concepts, differentiate between horizontal and vertical cloud services (with examples like Gmail vs. Workday), and consider important software architecture and design considerations (such as scalability, security, and cost optimization). The chapter includes diagrams to illustrate cloud strategy frameworks and architecture layers, as well as tables to compare service categories and vendor roles. By the end, you should have a clear understanding of how to formulate an enterprise cloud strategy that is comprehensive, aligned with organizational needs, and adaptable to future technological evolutions.
