    Hands-On Lab Exercise

    Lab: Designing an Enterprise Cloud Strategy

    Objective: Create a comprehensive cloud strategy document for a fictional enterprise using the CCOA framework.

    Scenario: MedConnect is a healthcare technology company with 500 employees and the following profile:

    • Provides electronic health records (EHR) software to 200 hospital clients
    • Currently runs on-premises in two data centers (US East, US West)
    • Must comply with HIPAA and plans to expand to EU (requiring GDPR compliance)
    • Clients request API access to integrate with third-party health applications
    • Experiencing 20% annual growth; current infrastructure is at 75% capacity
    • CEO wants a cloud strategy that enables rapid expansion without massive capital investment

    Instructions:

    1. Stakeholder Mapping (15 min): Identify and map the cloud ecosystem for MedConnect. Who are the clients, which cloud vendors should be considered, and what types of partners would be valuable? Create a stakeholder diagram.
    2. CCOA Principle Application (30 min): For each of the seven CCOA principles, write a 2–3 sentence recommendation for how MedConnect should apply it. Be specific about technologies, services, or approaches.
    3. Service Classification (15 min): Classify the cloud services MedConnect will need into horizontal and vertical categories. Create a table: Service Need | Horizontal or Vertical | Recommended Service | Justification.
    4. Architecture Design (20 min): Create a high-level architecture diagram showing:
      • Multi-region deployment for US and EU
      • How the EHR application will be delivered (SaaS to clients)
      • API gateway for third-party integrations
      • Data sovereignty compliance approach
      • Security and governance layers
    5. Governance Plan (10 min): Outline a cloud governance plan covering: cost management approach, security policies, compliance monitoring, and the composition of a CCoE team for MedConnect.

    Deliverables:

    • Stakeholder ecosystem diagram
    • CCOA principles application document (7 recommendations)
    • Service classification table
    • High-level architecture diagram
    • Governance plan outline
