Lab: Creating a Workload Migration Plan
Objective: Develop a comprehensive migration and implementation plan for moving on-premises workloads to the cloud.
Scenario: RetailMax operates three on-premises applications:
- E-commerce Website: Java application, Apache/Tomcat, MySQL database, 50,000 daily users, seasonal peaks (3x during holidays)
- Inventory Management System: .NET application, SQL Server database, internal use only, 200 concurrent users, requires low latency to warehouse systems
- Data Analytics Pipeline: Python batch jobs running on a Hadoop cluster, processes 2TB nightly, generates reports for executives
Instructions:
- Workload Profiling (20 min): Create a workload profile for each application covering: compute requirements, storage needs, network dependencies, availability SLA, security/compliance needs, scaling pattern, and latency sensitivity.
- Migration Strategy Selection (15 min): For each workload, select a migration approach (lift-and-shift, re-platform, or re-architect). Create a decision matrix showing: Workload | Strategy | Justification | Estimated Effort | Expected Benefits.
- Cloud Architecture Design (25 min): Design the target cloud architecture including:
- VPC layout with public and private subnets across 2 availability zones
- Placement of each workload component
- Load balancing strategy (specify Layer 4 vs Layer 7)
- Scaling approach for each workload
- Database migration approach
- Migration Sequencing (15 min): Create a phased migration timeline. Which workload do you migrate first, and why? Identify dependencies between workloads and risks at each phase.
- Cost Optimization Plan (15 min): For the migrated environment, identify at least 5 specific optimization opportunities (right-sizing, reserved instances, auto-scaling schedules, storage tiering, etc.) with estimated savings.
Deliverables:
- Three workload profile documents
- Migration strategy decision matrix
- Target architecture diagram with VPC, subnets, and component placement
- Phased migration timeline
- Cost optimization recommendations with estimated savings
