4.3: Function and Appliction of a 4/3 DCV

Directional Control Valves: 3-Position, 4-Way DCVs: Function and Purpose

To control the movement of a double-acting cylinder without manually switching hoses, a directional control valve (DCV) is used. In hydraulic systems, DCVs function as flow switches, directing hydraulic fluid to different ports to control actuator movement.

A 3-position, 4-way DCV provides three essential functions:

    1. Extend the cylinder rod

    2. Retract the cylinder rod

    3. Hold the cylinder rod in position (neutral state)

This type of valve is commonly found in hydraulic circuits that require precise directional control, such as industrial automation, presses, and heavy machinery.
