A flow control valve regulates the speed of an actuator by controlling the flow rate of hydraulic fluid. The basic components of a flow control valve include:
- A valve body with inlet and outlet ports
- A tapered adjustment screw
- An adjustment knob
- An internal check valve poppet
- A small spring to assist the poppet function
This valve can be configured to restrict flow in one direction while allowing near-unrestricted flow in the other. This is accomplished using the check valve in parallel with the variable orifice. The schematic symbol for this type of valve typically shows a variable restriction with a check valve in parallel, often drawn as a parallel line bypassing the orifice.
The control valve schematic symbol is drawn with a needle valve inline with the transmission lines and parallel will be a check valve. A second version provides a ghost line around the device to represent that both components are in the same valve body.
