    13.2: Procedure

    Background Information

    1. Navigate to the Virtual Biology Lab: An Inquiry-Based Learning Environment Barnacle Competition Study Simulation page.

    2. From the home page click on the “Background Information” link. Read through all 3 pages of the background and answer questions #1-4 of your lab report prior to proceeding with the simulation.

    Note

You will see navigation arrows at the bottom of each “page”. Use these to navigate forward and backwards within the simulation.

    3. Return to the home page.

    Note

You will see a house icon on the upper right-hand corner of the screen. You can use this to navigate back to the home page.

    4. After returning to the home page, click on the “Tutorial” link to get an overview of how the simulation works. There is a total of 8 pages of instructions in the tutorial, be sure to read through them all carefully before moving on.

    Note

Advance through the different pages of the tutorial by clicking the “Next” button in the middle of the screen.

    5. Return to the home page using the house icon on the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

Part I: Experiment with Preset Values

    6. Click on the “Run Experiments” link. Locate the data table in the middle of the screen. Note the preset Values for each of the following should match what is shown below.

Preset Data Values for the Experiment
    Variable Value
    Sea Level (m) 0
    Tide Change (m) 3
    Balanus (Larvae/mL) 2.5
    Chthamalus (Larvae/mL) 2.5
    Thais Density 3

    7. Next, click the “To Data” arrow in the center of the screen to begin the simulation.

    8. After 10 days of observation, pause the simulation and record these values in the first table in the Data section.

Part II: Experiment with Increased Sea Level and Belanus Larvae Values

    9. Once you have recorded your data, click the “To Design” link in the center of the page to go back and re-set the values for the next experiment. Using the up and down arrows on the controls, raise the Sea Level to 1 m to simulate sea level rise due to climate change. Also, increase the Belanus larvae to 3.5. Note the Values for each of the variables should now match what is shown below.

Adjusted Data Values with Sea Level Rise and Adjusted Balanus Population
    Variable Value
    Sea Level (m) 1
    Tide Change (m) 3
    Balanus (Larvae/mL) 3.5
    Chthamalus (Larvae/mL) 2.5
    Thais Density 3

    10. Next, click the “To Data” arrow in the center of the screen to begin the simulation.

    11. After 10 days of observation, pause the simulation and record these values in data table 13.2.

Part III: Experiment with Your Desired Values

    12. For the final part of the experiment, use the controls to manipulate the variables and set them to a value of your choice. Record these values in data table 13.3.

    13. As with parts 1 and 2 of the lab, once you have set the values, click the “To Data” arrow in the center of the screen to begin the simulation.

    14. After 10 days of observation, pause the simulation and record these values in data table 13.4.
