    4.9: A Livestock Industry Overview

Today, livestock and poultry production form a critical part of the global economy, accounting for a significant portion of world agriculture. The consumption of animal products is rising, driven by both a growing population and increasing affluence in developing countries. Animal products are a vital source of high-quality protein, vitamins, and minerals that are essential for human health.

The global livestock industry is dominated by beef, pork, and poultry, with production of all three increasing significantly.

    • Beef and Dairy: Beef and milk production are growing.
    • Pork: Pork production has seen massive increases worldwide, especially in China and Southeast Asia, largely due to a shift toward intensive, large-scale production systems.
    • Poultry: Chicken and egg production have been growing rapidly worldwide due to consumer preference for these products and the efficiency of modern production systems. This trend is especially pronounced in countries like Vietnam, India, China, and Brazil.

The increasing production of animal products has met the rising global demand, but it has also led to a more industrialized model of agriculture. This shift has raised questions about resource use, environmental impact, and animal welfare, which remain key discussion points.
