8.1: Introduction to Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering

Biotechnology is the use of biological systems, organisms, or their components to develop products and technologies that benefit society. In agriculture and animal science, biotechnology ranges from traditional methods such as fermentation and selective breeding to modern applications like genetic engineering, gene editing, and cloning. The modern era of biotechnology began in 1953 with the discovery of DNA’s double-helical structure, laying the foundation for recombinant DNA (rDNA) technologies and molecular genetics.

Today, biotechnology supports food production, animal health, environmental management, and human medicine. Genetic engineering—one of the most transformative tools in biotechnology—allows scientists to directly modify an organism’s DNA to introduce beneficial traits, improve productivity, produce pharmaceuticals, and study disease. Its development has transformed fields such as livestock management, disease prevention, drug production, and transplantation medicine.

Let's explore the foundational principles underlying these biotechnological approaches, examine the techniques that enable genetic modification, and consider both the remarkable opportunities and the essential ethical responsibilities that accompany our growing ability to reshape animal biology.
