WBC Morphology - Image-Based Identification
Objective
Build skill in recognizing white blood cell types by their visual (photomicrographs) features, then use that skill to make and interpret a basic WBC differential. This skill is central to understanding immune responses and diagnosing many blood disorders. You'll see how distinct nuclear shapes, cytoplasmic colors, and the presence or absence of granules help distinguish each cell type (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils) using feature-based criteria. Modern techniques, including both manual examination and machine-learning tools, enhance accuracy and speed in WBC identification.
Instructions
Examine instructor-provided images (Figure \(\PageIndex{1}\)) of stained peripheral blood smears; identify WBCs using defined morphological cues; justify each ID with at least two distinctive features.
Figure \(\PageIndex{1}\) displays five microscopic images of blood formed elements labeled by numbers. Each image highlights different white blood cell types.
