    1.4: Activity 3

Microscopic Exploration of a Multipolar Motor Neuron

Objective: The objective of this lab activity is to observe and identify the structural features of a multipolar motor neuron under a microscope.

    Materials

Microscope, Multipolar Motor Neuron Prepared Slide

    Instructions

    1. Start with a lower magnification objective 4 times (scanning lens), focus, change to 10 times, to appreciate the most important tissue features.
    2. Use a higher-power objective lens (40 times) only to confirm details.
    3. Inspect the slide with a good light source to determine the shape of the prepared section.
    • Label the following structures: axon, cell body, dendrite, nucleus, Nucleolus, Nissl bodies, neurofibrils, and glial cells. Note: sometimes it is difficult to differentiate axons and dendrites.
    • Summarize your observations and findings in this space.
