    4.5: Activity 4

    Identification of Phases of Mitosis

    1. Observe the 4 figures representing random sequence of mitosis.
    2. Identify the specific stage of mitosis, justify identification by distinctive features for the stage and fill in Table \(\PageIndex{1}\).
    Four stages of cell division.
Figure \(\PageIndex{1}\): Stages of mitosis in a cell: A is metaphase, B is prophase, C is telophase, D is anaphase.

Figure \(\PageIndex{1}\) displays four stages of mitosis in a cell, labeled A through D. In image A (metaphase), chromosomes are aligned at the center of the cell between spindle fibers extending from opposite poles. In image B (prophase), chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes and the nuclear envelope disintegrates while spindle fibers begin to form. In image C (telophase), two new nuclei form around separated chromatids at each pole of the cell as it begins to divide. In image D (anaphase), sister chromatids are pulled apart by spindle fibers towards opposite poles.
