Exploring Anatomical Planes and Directions with Gummy Bear
This lab activity aims to help students understand and apply anatomical terminology related to body planes/sections (sagittal, frontal, transverse), regional terms, and directional terms (superior, inferior, anterior, posterior, etc.) using a fun and engaging approach with gummy bears. After finishing the activity, take photos and put them into a presentation. Fill in the table by drawing in the space provided.
Materials needed are:
- 4 Gummy bears per student (Large Cinnamon Bears work best!)
- 1 Plastic knife per student
- Cutting board or protective surface
- 4 Post it note per student
- Colored pins
| What you need to do | Draw in the space |
|---|---|
| Take one gummy bear and a blade. Cut through the mid-sagittal plane of the bear. Draw a picture of the two parts of the gummy bear after it has been cut and label and describe cut in the next column. |
|
| Take a second gummy bear. Now make a cut through the frontal or coronal plane. Draw this diagram and label and describe cut in the next column. |
|
| Take a third gummy bear and cut through a transverse or horizontal plane. Draw this diagram and label and describe cut in the next column. |
|
| Take a fourth gummy bear and cut through a parasagittal plane. Draw this diagram and label and describe cut in the next column. |
