Smiling, spectacled coauthor Susmita Sengupta in her home garden.

Author: Susmita Sengupta, PhD has over 29 years of teaching experience at both graduate and undergraduate levels, including the past two decades at Bay Area community colleges, where she currently teaches Human Anatomy, Physiology, and Human Biology. She has also taught Genetics, General Biology, Mammalian Cell Culture, and Gene Expression in Cell Culture.

She has participated in professional development ranging from the Summer Institute of Functional Genomics and Bioinformatics at UC Davis (2005) to Instructional Skills Workshops at De Anza College (2018, 2020) and RSI training (Winter 2025). She was part of the NSF-funded CCB FEST project (2010–14) at San Francisco State University and currently serves on the Academic Advisory Committee of the Explorer’s Guide to Biology.

Her service includes roles on the Curriculum, Education Policies, Evaluation, and Professional Development Committees. Earlier, her postdoctoral research examined genetic impacts of the 1984 Bhopal Union Carbide disaster. She has authored over 26 peer-reviewed publications and developed lab manuals for her courses.

Some of her selected publications are :

Lakshmikanta in a black t-shirt with the ocean in the background.

Author: Lakshmikanta Sengupta, Ph.D, is a biology educator with 39 years of experience teaching and mentoring across postsecondary fields, including genetics, biotechnology, and human anatomy & physiology. He envisions educational institutions as vibrant communities, much like a living village, where learning and collaboration thrive.

With rigorous academic training and experience, he translates complex biology into clear, engaging explanations. Dr. Sengupta actively encourages collaboration among educators and students to share best practices and improve the quality of educational materials available to all learners.

He collaborated with the Community College Biology Faculty Enhancement through Scientific Teaching (CCB FEST), a program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), to coauthor research publications, including those in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), USA, and CBE—Life Sciences Education (Published by the American Society for Cell Biology).

With a keen eye for detail, he uses photography to capture intricate aspects of life, including natural phenomena and anatomical structures. Cooking is another important passion that allows him to explore the science of nutrition and health. Gardening reflects his commitment to sustainability and the natural world.

Accessibility and Editor: Jyothsna Viswanadha is a Mathematics Instructor at De Anza College. She has experience teaching community college mathematics courses, including developmental mathematics, calculus, and business calculus.

She is committed to student-centered and equity-minded teaching. She has also taught in programs designed to help close equity gaps in mathematics education, including the Math Performance Success (MPS) program.

Jyothsna supports the use of Open Educational Resources (OER) in her classes and has helped develop OER workbooks for Calculus III. As part of this work, she has transferred course content from existing files to LibreTexts, formatted and standardized images, formatted instructional labs and performed accessibility checks to support compliance with accessibility standards

She is also committed to community service. She volunteers with organizations such as Vision Literacy and Assistance League to support underserved populations in reaching their educational goals.
