Exploring Depth: Unraveling Layers with Three Colored Threads Under the Microscope
The colored threads activity under a microscope demonstrates depth perception and depth of field. By observing how different colored threads, stacked on top of each other, come into and out of focus at varying magnifications, one can understand how the microscope's lenses allow us to perceive depth. At low magnification, all threads may appear relatively sharp, but as magnification increases, only one thread will be in focus at a time, requiring adjustments to the fine focus knob to view different layers.
Obtain a prepared slide with three different colored threads. View the slide under scanning (4 times) and then low power (10 times) objective lens. You should note that you could only focus on one colored thread at one time. Determine which thread is on top by lowering your stage all the way, then slowly raising it until the thread comes into focus. The first thread to come into focus is the one on top.
- Which color thread is on top?
- Which color thread is in the middle?
- Which color thread is on the bottom?
