    6.6: Activity 4

Visualizing Changes in Skin Color Due to Continuous External Pressure

In this lab activity, you will explore how continuous external pressure affects skin color. This exercise will help you understand the physiological responses of the skin, including how blood flow and oxygenation can change skin appearance under different conditions. By observing these changes, you will gain insights into the mechanisms behind skin color variations, which can be relevant in various medical and cosmetic contexts.

    Instructions

    1. Use a small glass plate for this observation.
    2. Firmly press the heel of your hand against the glass plate for several seconds. Ensure you apply enough pressure to cause a noticeable change in your skin color.
    3. After releasing the pressure, look through the glass and observe the color of your skin in the compressed area. Record your observations, noting any changes in color.
    4. Write down the reason behind the color change you observed. What physiological processes are at play?
    5. Discuss what might happen if the pressure were maintained for an extended period in that area. How would the skin and underlying tissues respond?
