A Sister of the Red Cross: A Tale of the South African War

"A Sister of the Red Cross: A Tale of the South African War" by Mrs. L. T. Meade is a historical novel written in the late 19th century. The story centers around Sister Mollie Hepworth, a dedicated nurse who dreams of serving soldiers in times of war, and her younger sister Kitty, who longs for love and acceptance. As tensions mount leading to the South African War, Mollie's commitment to her profession and Kitty's romantic pursuits become intertwined, creating a visually rich tapestry of sisterly bonds, duty, and impending conflict. The opening of the tale introduces us to Mollie as she prepares to take a short break to spend time with her sister Kitty in London after her exhausting training as a nurse. The chapter highlights their close relationship, setting a tone of both warmth and underlying tension. Kitty expresses her excitement about seeing Gavon Keith, her almost fiancé, whilst Mollie's resolve to dedicate herself to nursing soldiers hints at future conflicts that may arise as the war looms. Unsurprisingly, both sisters possess a sense of purpose, albeit directed towards vastly different goals, creating a dynamic that promises to develop as the narrative unfolds against the backdrop of war.
