Memoirs of Louis XIV and His Court and of the Regency — Volume 08
by Louis de Rouvroy Saint-Simon, duc de
"Memoirs of Louis XIV and His Court and of the Regency — Volume 08" by Saint-Simon is a historical account written during the early 18th century. This volume delves into the tumultuous political and social climate of France during the reigning period of Louis XIV, detailing both court life and the shadow of corruption that penetrated the royal governance, all while keeping a keen focus on the characters involved in this era. The narrative likely centers on the relationships and intrigues among the king, nobility, and prominent figures such as Desmarets, reflected through the lens of the Duke of Saint-Simon’s personal observations and opinions. The opening of this volume sets the stage amidst the turmoil of France’s financial crisis and social unrest, highlighting the burden placed on the populace by excessive taxation imposed by the struggling king and his ministers. Key figures such as the king himself, who is burdened by what he perceives as his duty to extract wealth from his subjects, and Desmarets, who grapples with the responsibilities of financial reforms, take center stage. The narrative captures the deep despair of the populace and the infighting within court factions, where even personal matters, such as the illness of the King’s son, merge with larger political maneuverings, laying the groundwork for the explorations of power and disquiet that characterize Saint-Simon's work.
