L'Imperatore Giuliano l'Apostata: studio storico

"L'Imperatore Giuliano l'Apostata: studio storico" by Gaetano Negri is a historical account written in the early 20th century. The work delves into the life and actions of Emperor Julian, often referred to as the "Apostate" for his attempts to restore paganism in the Roman Empire during a time when Christianity was gaining power. The book aims to provide an objective examination of Julian's motivations and the broader social and philosophical landscape of his time. At the start of the study, Negri emphasizes the importance of an impartial approach to history, specifically the history of religions. He suggests that Julian's character serves as a focal point through which to explore the complex interplay between paganism and Christianity during his reign. The opening portion introduces the historical context surrounding Julian's life and briefly outlines his ambitions to revive older belief systems. Negri also highlights Julian's education and philosophical influences, setting the stage for an exploration of his public policies and the reactions they elicited from the Christian establishment. Overall, the initial chapters establish a foundation for further analysis of Julian's legacy and the contrasting viewpoints of contemporary scholars.
