About this work

The Dutch herringfleet by Pieter Vogelaer, second half 17th century. Herring was a vital Dutch export product, one of the mainstays of the republic's economy. Herring was a Dutch speciality of the fisherman of the Dutch towns along the river Maas and the Zuiderzee. With their large boats, they dominated herring fishing completely. The fish was cleaned at sea and then processed on shore.
